The story behind the scaffolding

Photos show the finished roof — these are the problems we started with, what we did about them, and how each job turned out.

Case study 01

Full slate re-roof on a Victorian terrace

Service
Slate roofing
Location
Paisley
Duration
2 weeks

A century-old slate roof at the end of its life, replaced with natural slate that respects the character of the terrace.

A completed traditional slate roof on a Paisley stone terrace

The challenge

The original roof had been patched for decades. Nail sickness meant slates were slipping faster than they could be repaired, and water was starting to reach the sarking boards. The owners wanted the roof renewed without losing the traditional look of the street.

What we did

We stripped the roof back to the timbers, replaced sections of sarking, fitted a breathable membrane and re-slated in natural slate, matching the coursing of the neighbouring houses. Ridges were rebedded and the leadwork around the chimney renewed at the same time.

The result

A watertight roof with decades of life ahead of it, finished in keeping with the rest of the terrace. Scaffolding down, site cleared, and the owners kept the leftover slates for any future repairs.

Flat roof replacement on a rear extension

Service
Flat roofing
Location
Renfrewshire
Duration
3 days

A failed felt roof with standing water, replaced with a modern high-performance system in three days.

A newly installed flat roof with neat welded seams and trim

The challenge

The original felt roof on the kitchen extension was ponding after every rainfall, and damp was showing on the ceiling inside. The felt had blistered and cracked, and the roof deck beneath was starting to soften in places.

What we did

We stripped the old felt, replaced the damaged decking, corrected the falls so water actually drains, and installed a modern membrane system with welded seams and new edge trims. Insulation was upgraded at the same time to current standards.

The result

No more ponding, no more damp patch, and a roof with a design life measured in decades rather than years. The kitchen ceiling was redecorated the following week.

Case study 03

Chimney repointing & leadwork renewal

Service
Chimney & leadwork
Location
Paisley
Duration
4 days

A leaking chimney that two previous firms couldn’t cure, traced to failed flashings and fixed for good.

A repointed chimney stack with fresh lead flashing

The challenge

Water had been appearing around the chimney breast in an upstairs bedroom for years. Previous patch repairs treated the symptoms — the real cause was a combination of eroded pointing and lead flashings that had split and pulled away from the stack.

What we did

We raked out and repointed the full stack, renewed the flaunching around the pots, and stripped and replaced the lead flashings and soakers, dressing new lead into the masonry properly rather than relying on sealant.

The result

The bedroom has stayed dry through every storm since. The stack is weathertight, secure, and good for decades — no sealant in sight.
